Temple Israel provides a variety of services. The regular schedule of services is on the Home page.
Shabbat Mornings
Main Service
We celebrate the Shabbat morning service in the main sanctuary with the leadership of the Rabbis, the Cantor, and one or more officers. Our large congregation gives us many opportunities to share simchas; bar and bat mitzvahs, baby namings, and aufrufs are frequent events. Members of the congregation typically lead Birkhot Hashachar, Pesukei DeZimra, and Shacharit, and chant the Parasha. If you would like to participate in the service, contact Cantor Dress.
Junior Congregation & Babysitting - 10:15 am to noon
Junior Congregation and babysitting have been developed not just for the sake of allowing parents the time for meaningful prayer, but also to bring our children to a place of significant spiritual growth. Junior Congregation and babysitting follow the same schedule, generally meeting throughout the school year. They do not meet during the summer.
Friday Evening Shabbat Offerings
Temple Israel offers a variety of Friday Evening Shabbat Offerings, from the traditional to creative.
Traditional Minyan - typically held in the Rosenstein Chapel downstairs. Leaders of the minyan may be by professionals or lay leaders. Melodies generally conform with a classical approach to rendering the prayers. The service is as participatory as the leader and those in attendance so desire.
Mishpacha Minyan - A lay-led spirited service for all in our community. This Kabbalat Shabbat service offers a complete service rich in Carlebach-styled neo-Hassidic melodies and approaches.
Families and individuals of all ages, including our USYers, are often attracted to this intimate davening , experience. Dinners, with sprited singing ( zemirot ), typically accompany the service, although dinner reservations are not required for those who simply wish to join in the davening .
Shabbat Ma Gadlu - a spirited, somewhat abbreviated Kabbalat Shabbat service for all in our community. It is typically led by Cantor Dress who integrates traditional and contemporary melodies and educational nuggets within the prayer experience. Families with pre Bat/Bar Mitzvah age youngsters may especially appreciate this family-friendly approach.
Dinners, with spirited singing (zimirot), typically accompany the service, although dinner reservations are not required for those who simply wish to join in the davening.
Other Shabbat Approaches - to which everyone is welcome - may be led by our Rabbi and Cantor, our youth or members of our synagogue (e.g., Brotherhood, Sisterhood, Hazak, USY). Services may include our adult Rinat Yisrael Chorus and/or Junior Chorale. Guest speakers may be featured in connection with a special Kabbalat Shabbat offering.
Traditions
Temple Israel's newest initiative, TRADITIONS is for families with children from 0-5. TRADITIONS programs will give opportunities for young families to gather in meaningful moments of Jewish learning and living. Boker Tov Shabbat “good morning Sabbath” services will infuse the joy of Torah, tradition and singing as a young group on Shabbat mornings. TRADITIONS programming will also include monthly Kabbalat Shabbat, Havdalah services, Interactive Kitchen, as well as parenting groups and holiday gatherings. "Make family time a Tradition".
